Perseids meteor shower in Bay Area
I found a great spot to watch meteor showers in Bay Area. Reddit recommend stopping on Mount Hamilton road (towards Lick Observatory) but that is both illegal and borderline unsafe. Instead you can apply for a after dark astronomy permit which lets you park at midnight in one of the parking lots and stargaze. This year I went to Monte Bello preserve (about 30 minute drive from Cupertino) and got a permit here: https://www.openspace.org/where-to-go/permits/after-hours-astronomy-permit (It's online and you just print it out, the permit itself has a code for the gate lock)
It's really convenient! Just bring a blanket and a comfortable chair to sit on. Especially something that can support your neck as you will be looking up a lot. We could see about 15 meteors by after an hour.

I tried to take photos but failed. Maybe a long exposure mode with tripod and newer iPhone might work better. I will try that next year.
